The city of Ghent has been the home of ArrrrCamp since its inception. You'll find a beautiful city centre, several museums, plenty of restaurants and hotels and of course tons of places serving our famous Belgian beers.
The conference venue is a place called Zebrastraat. It's a great location in what used to be part of a zoo and has now become a meeting point for conferences and expositions.
After the talks there'll be opportunities to visit some of our favorite watering holes or grab a bite in the centre of Ghent.
Ghent is home to a lot of hotels and bed & breakfast places. Finding a place to stay that strikes your fancy should not be a problem.
Some of our speakers are staying at the Marriott. If you use the code arrrrcamp2013 you should receive a nice discount (final price should be in the region of €150 per night). You can make your reservations via firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 0032 9 269 77 22.
If you need more inspiration, take a look at these places. Price and location will vary.
Don't worry if your hotel is further from the venue than you'd like: public transportation in Ghent is accessible and cheap enough to get around!
If you're flying in, you'll want to book a ticket to Brussels Airport and not Brussels South.
From the airport there are several trains each hour to Ghent-Sint-Pieters. The ride should take you about an hour. Booking tickets in the train station is easy and fairly cheap. You'll find more information on nmbs.be
From the Gent-Sint-Pieters train station you can take a bus with number 70-71-72-73-74-76-77 on platform 11. Get off at the stop Leeuwstraat. (This is the 7th stop). Warning: platform 11 is behind St. Pieters station.
Finding a taxi at the train station won't be a problem either, a ride should set you back about €10.
If you have some time to spare, walking is an option as well. This will take about about 30 minutes. See Google Maps for details.
If you're coming by car, just keep following "Gent". Coming from either Brugge or Brussels, at Zwijnaarde, follow "Gent / Antwerpen" onto the E17. Finally, take the exit "Gent Centrum". There are several parkings close to the venue. View the map for detailed location.
Food & drinks
If you're looking to go out for food or drinks we can recommend a stroll through the city centre, specifically the area of the Vlaanderenstraat or Patershol. Ghent also has plenty of vegetarian offerings, such as Komkommertijd or De Appelier. Fabula Rasa also has a bunch of fantastic dishes with fresh vegetables. Their menu includes some of the best burgers we've ever had.
The 'student place to be' called Overpoort is very close to the venue as well, and will be very lively on a thursday or friday night. There's also a bunch of bars close by with some of our amazing beers on tap, such as Den Hemel, De Brouwzaele, Backdoor. Our fine ladies and gentlemen of the crew will gladly guide you to one of these for a couple drinks!
Those who stay on saturday (or longer) to visit our lovely city can stroll at Graslei, one of the most scenic places of the old city centre, or do some shopping in Veldstraat which is very close by. The museums are conveniently listed over here, we're sure you'll see something you like. You could even consider a trip on a boat on one of Ghent's magnificent canals, or relax in one of our public parks.
